Choosing a home safe is imperative to the security of yourself and your family, keeping your valuables out of the hands of criminals and firearms out of the hands of children. But with a wide variety of safes to choose from, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. Here are a few guidelines to consider in selecting a home or gun safe:

1. Will you be storing electronics? Where other brands require you to drill a hole in the back of your safe if you want to connect or charge your devices, most of our 2011 safes come with a double outlet, USB port, and RJ45 ethernet connection. Many people buy home safes primarily to protect their guns and valuables from fire. However, many prospective safe buyers are duped into buying an inferior safe because of exaggerated fire ratings. Here are a few things to remember when buying a fireproof safe:

1. How long will your safe burn? A fire rating of at least fifteen minutes is absolutely necessary. If you’re looking for an extra level of protection however, some Cannon safes come with up to 90 minutes of fire protection.
2. Has your safe been properly tested? The safe you use should be tested against industry standards. You should also know how many sensors were used while testing the fireproofing of your safe – if there were too few, then fire proof claims may be exaggerated. Most Cannon Safes adhere to requirements for extended sensor placement and upper tier installation under Intertek-ETL.
3. Does the door close tightly? Test out the safe and make sure that the door doesn’t rattle at all when it is shut. "On Sept 17-2011 my home burned to the ground. My guns were in a Cannon gun safe. It was still standing. I removed it from the ash and opened it. My guns inside were in remarkably good shape for what they had been through. Some that were in cases, looked untouched. Others, you can tell, had a lot of heat and smoke on them, but, are still in good shape. Even my scopes made it. Some of the stocks have some blistering on them. Everything is usable and will clean up. Since the fire, Cannon customer service has been great. They called to see if I got the safe open and I have a new safe on the way. I would like to thank David, and all the fine folks at Cannon Safe, for a job well done."

After his home was struck by a tornado, Richard Pearce from Hot Springs, AK was kind enough to send us this testimonial about his experience:

"My family and I went through a tornado on April 25 2011. The house was totaled and had a lot of water from the holes in the roof. My Cannon Patriot protected my guns with no problems.
